Every product on this list is marketed as vegan. But "marketed as vegan" and "actually vegan" aren't always the same thing. During our testing, we checked every ingredient list for hidden animal-derived additives.
Common things to watch for in protein powders:
- Vitamin D3: Often derived from lanolin (sheep wool). Some brands use lichen-based D3 instead.
- Natural flavors: A vague term that can sometimes include animal-sourced compounds.
- Sugar processed with bone char: Some conventional sugar sources still use this method.

Each serving provides 21g of protein from pea, brown rice, and chia seeds. It's USDA Organic and free from artificial sweeteners — sweetened instead with organic erythritol and organic stevia. Mixability was the best in its price range at 8.5 out of 10.
The only downside: 21g of protein per scoop is on the lower side if you're trying to hit 40g+ per shake. You'll need a double scoop, which changes the value equation.

Does KOS Actually Taste Good?
If taste is your top priority, KOS is the answer. The chocolate flavor tied with Vega Sport at 8.5 out of 10, but several testers noted that KOS had a smoother, more dessert-like quality when mixed with water alone. That matters because many vegan powders only taste decent with milk.
KOS uses a five-protein blend — pea, flax seed, quinoa, pumpkin seed, and chia seed — delivering 20g per serving. It includes digestive enzymes, which we noticed helped reduce the bloating some testers experience with pea-heavy powders.

The value is unbeatable at $0.04 per gram of protein. But there's a reason it ranked 10th overall: the taste. Unflavored pea protein tastes like, well, peas. Our panel scored it 5 out of 10 for taste. Mixability was also below average at 6.5 — it clumps easily and leaves gritty residue.
This is a powder built for smoothies where you're adding fruit, nut butter, and other ingredients that mask the flavor. Don't try it in just water unless you enjoy punishment.
